Philip’s Rainbow

Philip Appleton is a former airline pilot forced to stop flying in 1981 after a breakdown.

Born in 1954 of English and French parents, Philip gained a scholarship to the Haberdashers’ Aske’s School, Elstree and was sponsored by British Airways for airline pilot training in 1973.

Having worked as a flying instructor and flown 1, 2, 3, and 4-engined aircraft, with a total of 3,000 hours flying experience, mainly in command, Philip spent five months in psychiatric hospitals before being transferred to a ground job handling the private jets of the rich and famous at London’s Heathrow Airport.

In 1988, Philip completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Management Studies at Thames Valley University, leaving the aviation industry in 1992.

After working as an encyclopaedia salesman, a legal interpreter, and a Customer Service Manager, he became an actor in 1997, under the name ‘Philip Delancy’.

Philip has also given technical presentations in both English and French at international exhibitions and sold products on television.

As a communication skills coach, he was sent to Rome in 2014 to deliver a workshop to international psychiatrists under the banner: ‘Maximising Patient Outcomes Long Term’.

His first book, ‘BLUE SKY, RED CARPET’ charts his recovery to the best time of his life. He is Treasurer of The Windsor Writer’s Group.

Philip’s trivia include winning BBC’s ‘Crackerjack’, appearing on ‘News at Ten’ with Paul and Linda McCartney, and having a 10cm figurine made of him as a Naboo Pilot for Star Wars ‘The Phantom Menace’.
